Twin They/Them: For the remainder of the Semester - Bélier

by: Mardline Prevot

Wow, what a week! I got a jaw-dropping look at the new Avatar 3: Fire and Ash trailer right in my 2-D Animation course, and honestly, it felt like an education in itself. It's incredible to see how advanced technology can be harnessed to create such visual intimacy—especially the empathy that shines through the characters' eyes. It’s the perfect inspiration as I prepare to juggle the Prince George's Film Festival kickoff with AIGA DC Design Week. Juggling the showbiz and design worlds isn't new to me at all; in fact, I'm currently focusing on building and prioritizing my network within the LGBTQIA+ community, figuring out the right public-facing name to go with it. You might have heard people use names like Marci, Queen, Mardie, Mardy, or Madeline, or maybe you've just seen a certain face expression meme that says it all! It's all about making sure my name and my face truly represent the work and the community I’m committed to supporting.

A year ago, I was standing at a crossroads at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund's 24th Leadership Institute, a moment captured in a picture that's now a touchstone for me. It wasn't just another event; it was the place where I had to take a stand on voting representation. This wasn't about a personal victory; it was about securing my place on the correct side of history—not just as a Black trailblazer, but as a Black non-binary trailblazer in the United States. That experience solidified the understanding that the work I do is bigger than me. It's for my peers who take their craftsmanship seriously, setting an example so they can do the same and continue to pass that spirit on, building a better world. And let's be clear, I'm doing this for the DMV—the Northern East side of Washington, D.C., is in my bones, and we don't play around here. So to those watching, especially the haters: keep looking. You are simply witnessing my greatness, via Bélier (Aries in French), as I do things my way.
