A Day in the Life: My Graphic Design Internship
Week 5 has been a journey of growth, challenge, and creative wins. As an intern with Bowie State's Intramural and Recreation program, I've had the opportunity to put my Visual Communication and Digital Media Arts (VCDMA) skills into practice while learning on the fly. This week was all about a new design project and getting a deeper understanding of the program's operations.
My Duties and Collaborations
My primary responsibility this week was to design promotional materials for the Intramural Basketball league's "Call of Duty" themed week. Using Adobe Express, I created the graphics that were posted on the BSU Intramural Fitness Instagram page, @bsuintramuralfitness. This involved not just the design work but also organizing the information, including the names of players and their respective teams: the Panthers, Black Boxes, Mavericks, Wolvez, Aces, Mike the Tiger, Snipers, Vikings, Bulldogs, and Big Zips.
I worked closely with the program's staff, including a coworker who manages the basketball league. I also took the initiative to speak with security at the McKeldin Gymnasium and the Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex to better understand the day-to-day operations. This gave me valuable insight into how the staff runs things, which helps me create designs that are more effective and relevant to the audience.
New Skills and Lessons
This internship has been a powerful reminder that real-world experience is different from the classroom. While I've learned a lot in my VCDMA program, this role has helped me develop a tougher skin and a better understanding of the client-designer relationship. I've learned to stand firm in my design choices, while still being open to feedback. It’s about building trust with clients so they know you are a professional in your field. As a first-generation student, this kind of strategic growth is invaluable to me, and it honors my grandmother's Haitian legacy.
I've also been applying concepts from my VCDM 495 course, Advanced Digital Imaging: Topics in Design & Digital Imaging. In this class, I'm currently designing a 12-month calendar, and the feedback loop with my professor and peers is helping me refine my skills in advertising design. This hands-on practice, both in my internship and in class, is building my portfolio and helping me network within my field.
