A few weeks ago, I embarked on a journey to the Bowie State University Gallery of Art to experience "The Afrofuture: Exploring the Past, Present, and Future." This exhibition, running from February 19th to March 29th, 2024, isn't your typical sci-fi showcase. It's a portal into the captivating world of Afrofuturism, a cultural movement that shatters traditional narratives of the future by centering Black experiences, histories, and artistic sensibilities. Stepping into the gallery felt like stepping into this reimagined future – a future overflowing with creativity and bursting with visions that redefined the very concept.
While each piece in the exhibition was breathtaking, there was one in particular that left me mesmerized: "In Those Stars" by Michael Hillard. This captivating painting depicts a Black woman with an afro, her silhouette standing strong against the backdrop of a vast and swirling galaxy. The scene unfolds within a spiral galaxy, a collection of swirling stars, gas, and dust. A large lavender planet with a striking yellow ring sits prominently, flanked by two streaks of vibrant purple. Numerous white dots, representing countless stars, surround the figure, evoking the awe-inspiring vastness of the universe.

"The Afrofuture" isn't just about spaceships and distant planets; it's about reclaiming the narrative of the future. By centering Black figures and stories, the exhibition compels us to envision a future that is inclusive and brimming with possibility. Don't miss your chance to experience this visionary exhibition – the closing reception is on March 29th, offering a fantastic opportunity to hear the artists themselves speak about their creations and the inspiration behind them.
