"Kecy Salangad at Bowie State University, 2024

I had the incredible opportunity to attend a presentation by Kecy Salangad, a stop-motion character animator at Laika Studios. Kecy's presentation was part of my Stop-Motion and Experimental Animation class at Bowie State University, and it was a truly inspiring experience.

Kecy, who hails from Italy, shared his fascinating journey into the world of stop-motion animation. He began by discussing his early days in the field, when animation wasn't as prevalent in his home country. Despite the challenges, Kecy's passion for storytelling and animation led him to pursue his dream.

One of the most captivating aspects of Kecy's presentation was his discussion of the creative process behind stop-motion animation. He demonstrated an example of his work, titled "Metamorphosis," which showcased the intricate details and meticulous craftsmanship involved in this art form. Kecy also explained the importance of stage workflow support, animation department hierarchy, and puppet departments in creating a successful stop-motion animation.

A quote by Norman McLaren resonated deeply with me: "Animation is not the art of drawings that move but rather the art of movements that are drawn. What happens between each frame is more important than what happens on each frame." This powerful statement emphasized the significance of the unseen moments, the subtle movements, and the transitions that bring a stop-motion animation to life.

Kecy's presentation was a valuable learning experience for me, and I left feeling inspired and motivated to explore the world of stop-motion animation further. His passion, talent, and dedication to his craft were truly admirable.
